Desperate to Lose Weight? It Needs Time

diet-programsMotivation and Desire. Two things you must have to lose a sizable amount of weight.

If you are one of the millions of people who go on diet every year, chances are, there is a health reason that pushed you towards this lifestyle change. Many people are desperate to lose weight. The main reason is health and the other top reason is because they want to look good.

Whatever your motivation is, congratulate yourself. I lost 200 pounds. It takes time, focus and perseverance.

Losing weight by eating healthier will improve your quality of life tremendously. But before you start, ask your doctor what he thinks of the diet plan or program you wish to follow. Do not be reckless even if you’re desperate to lose weight.

Fad diets come and go. A true and sensible eating plan will always be around to stay and prove critics wrong. After your doctor has given his approval, look for a diet plan or program that best reflects what you want to accomplish. Perhaps you want to lose weight to control your diabetes or cholesterol. Or perhaps you’re training for a marathon or a long distance run and need to build endurance and strength by losing those last 5 pounds. Another reason why people are desperate to lose weight is to improve their body image and how they see themselves in the mirror. To make this diet program work, give yourself a week to mentally prepare for it, especially if you’re on a restrictive diet for medical reasons. There will be certain foods that you’ll no longer be allowed to have, so be prepared for that. Do not treat your diet plan as deprivation, otherwise you’ll resent it before it even starts.

Keep a journal. Write down what you typically eat in a day. Make an accurate list of breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks in between. Include drinks that you typically consume, whether coffee, tea, smoothies, juices or power drink. List down alcohol if you go out with friends after work. This journal is for you to see what time of the day you eat a lot and what you typically like eating. Nobody will judge you. It’s simply a list so don’t be afraid.

List down your activities. People who are desperate to lose weight will be surprised to know that increasing your activities will do wonders for your diet. Where do you usually go during the day? Do you work in an office? Do you run errands? Do you do household chores? Or, does your work require a lot of walking, standing, moving and running around? Again, this is just a list. Nobody will criticize your activities. You are here to do better and by looking at the totality of your daily routine, you’ll see areas where you can improve.

Do an inventory of what foods you have in the pantry and fridge. Do you usually have cookies, chocolate bars, chips and ice cream stashed away? Are your meals heavy on starch and carbohydrates? Do you have a lot of bread, pasta and rice? What meats do you have? What processed foods does your family like? Sugar and salt will sabotage any diet. Dessert can be thought of in a new way. Eventually, fruit platters will replace cakes and ice cream.

Processed meats like hotdogs and bacon will be kept to a minimum. Ready made dinners will eventually be a thing of the past because of preservatives and their salt content. Grazing while cooking or dong household chores, especially chips will have to stop. This habit will make you fall into the mindless eating category. You won’t realize that you’ve finished a bag of potato chips because you really were not thinking about it. Make an inventory of alcohol in the house. Include beer. How many do you have a week? When you’re desperate to lose weight, you’ll do your best to rid the cupboards and fridge of foods that will tempt you or make you lose your discipline. On the other hand, do not be so strict so you won’t feel that you’re depriving yourself.

Pick a date to start your diet. If there is a medical issue involved, your doctor will help you choose a diet. Some will be put on a restrictive diet as soon as results are in (for diabetes or cholesterol). If you have a choice on when to start, pick a date that is significant to you. This way when you look back, you’ll remember the date. Mark it on a calendar. Studies show that people who are desperate to lose weight pick a significant red letter day. Perhaps it’s your birthday, or a holiday or an anniversary. Whatever it is, make it a day to remember. Make it a great day to start on a new diet!

Now all you have to do is start. A healthy calorie count for women is 1200 calories a day. For most men, it’s 1800 calories. People start losing weight when the calories they burn is significantly higher than the calories they consume in a day. So make sure that you cut down on your calories or food intake and increase your daily activities by starting a sport or just by dong more walking. It is a start.

You might have to build up until you can go to the gym or perhaps take aerobic or dance classes. Do not underestimate the classes offered at the local YMCA or gym. There are people like you who are desperate to lose weight, too. Spin classes, kickboxing, zumba, dancing, aerobics or even bodybuilding are great ways to increase your daily activities and increase the calories you burn.

Get out of a sedentary lifestyle and you’ll see what a difference an hour of exercise can give you.

Track your mood. When you’re on a calorie restricted diet, you will experience mood swings. This is natural. There will be days when you might feel angry and hungry or angry and depressed. Go easy on yourself. Eat foods that make you feel good but are still on your list of good foods to eat. Some people sip lemon water throughout the day. The lemon helps them perk up. Some dieters need proteins from meat, so they have lean meats for dinner (grilled or baked). Avoid heavy sauces and cream based sauces. This will sabotage your diet. Snack on nuts or plain yogurt. A fruit platter also may help lighten up your mood. The best reward you’ll get from sticking to your diet is that as you see the pounds drop, you’ll know that you’ll end up healthier and looking good, too. Don’t be too hard on yourself on days when you slip.

Just get back on the plan again and be more active. The end result will be a new you, slimmer, healthier and happier. Suddenly, you’ll no longer be in the group of people who are desperate to lose weight and it will make you feel so much better! Congratulate yourself. You deserve it!
